Among the activities of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Bioinformatics, at Al-Andalus University, was the participation of Dr. Ghada Mhy Edden Saad in the World Congress on Nanoscience and Nanomaterials, a webinar held in Germany on 25-3-2022.
In the name of Al-Andalus University, Dr. Ghada Saad gave a lecture, entitled “Improving Wear Resistance for Grinding Balls of Horizontal Cement Mill in the Cement Plant by Nano Coating Technique.”
The research is concerned with the issue of reducing the wear rate of grinding balls used in horizontal cement plants and with increasing the consumption rates of the grinding mill. Samples of white cast iron were manufactured by specialized companies, Treadmill, according to the German standards of ASTM 522 and DIN1669. High velocity oxy fuel system HVOF was used for coating samples with (50,70,80 μm) thickness of tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles. Samples were tested using wearing test (pin-on-disc) and microhardness testing. Results show that the presence of nano-coating on the surface of the sample will increase the wear resistance of the balls by about (50-66%) and also increase microhardness by about (33%), which will consequently reduce the consumption rates by 50% and increase the life of cement grinding balls for about two to five years.
The conference scientific organizing committee has commended the presentation, research idea, work methodology, scientific importance, and high economic feasibility of the research, which are all illustrated by the research results. The research will be published in the conference journal. The Coordinating Committee has also requested the participation of Al-Andalus University in upcoming conferences.
