Biotechnology
.Module Description
Module Goals
This module aims to introduce the student to the concept of biotechnology and its fundamental sciences, especially molecular biology, genetic engineering and bioinformatics.
Assessment Methods
- Individual questions, quizzes, evaluation of external activities, theoretical and practical tests. These constitute 40% of total mark of the
- A final exam constituting 60% of total mark.
Module Syllabus
An introduction to cytology and genetic material, mechanism of transmission and translation into cellular information. The module also introduces genetic engineering that includes DNA recombination techniques, cloning, and the various applications of cloning such as PCR and DNA sequencing. It focuses on illustrating biotechnology applications in the medical fields and discusses the controversy about some of these applications (or what is called the ethics related to biotechnology).
