Molecular Biology

.Module Description

  • Module Goals

This module aims to provide the student with the most important information related to cellular genetic material at molecular level. The student learns about the structure and properties of the genetic material and the mechanism of transmitting and translating it into cellular information. In another context, the module enhances student’s information about the mechanism of genetic mutations, ways to prevent them biologically and methods used to diagnose them.

Assessment Methods

  • Individual questions, quizzes, evaluation of external activities, theoretical and practical tests. These constitute 40% of total mark of the
  • A final exam constituting 60% of total mark.

Module Syllabus

The module presents information on genetic material structure in both physiological and pathological state. The module begins with a detailed presentation of the structure of nitrogenous bases, nucleic acids, genes and chromosomes, and it ends with the genome and its concept. It focuses on the mechanisms of division, transcription of genetic material and its translation. A section of the module is devoted to oncogenes, bacteriophages and viruses of eukaryotes.
