Drug Synthesis

.Module Description

Module Goals

This module aims to make students master the use of organic chemical reactions in the synthesis of pharmaceutical molecules in several stages.

Assessment Methods

  • Individual questions, quizzes, evaluation of external activities, theoretical and practical tests. These constitute 40% of total mark of the
  • A final exam constituting 60% of total mark.

Module Syllabus

This module presents a complete picture of modern organic synthesis and its applications in the synthesis of molecules that belong to some pharmaceutical groups as well as the possibility of using basic spectral methods in the determination of the chemical structure of produced compounds. The module provides a full explanation of the basic concepts of UV-VIS spectra, IR, NMR-H1, NMR-C13 and MS. It also discusses the basic organic reactions used in synthesis. In addition, it addresses the concept of modern synthesis and its applications in the analysis of some synthetic designs and charts for a group of compounds belonging to important pharmaceutical groups.
