Pharmacology 1

.Module Description

Module Goals

This module aims to introduce students to pharmacology and its applications, with a focus on general pharmacology, drugs of autonomic nervous system, neuropsychological drugs and their therapeutic uses. The module also enables the student to gain the ability to understand the mechanisms of drug action and, therefore, the indications of and therapeutic use of these groups with sufficient knowledge of their drug-drug interactions and side effects.

Assessment Methods

  • Individual questions, quizzes, evaluation of homework and external activities, theoretical and practical tests. These constitute 40% of total mark of the
  • A final exam constituting 60% of total mark.

Module Syllabus

The module introduces the student to pharmacology, its branches and its importance to the practitioner and researcher. It also presents pharmacology as a very important and indispensable topic in the field of medical sciences. The module provides general concepts that govern the basic principles of pharmacology such as methods of application, absorption, drug metabolism and excretion. It also explains the basic mechanisms by which medicines exhibit their effect, which is achieved by interfering with specific structures such as receptors, enzymes or even cellular transport systems. The student, then, studies neurological drugs and their applications after having provided sufficient explanation of the autonomic nervous system (both sympathetic and sympathetic) with the pharmacological groups capable of modifying the activity of this system and their usage. Next, the student starts studying neurological diseases such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, Parkinson's and epilepsy. A sufficient explanation of the pathophysiology of these diseases is presented, according to the explanations of the latest studies, and the basis of treatment and the medicinal groups used are also provided.
