Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry
.Module Description
- Module Goals
To acquire knowledge about the stereochemistry of non-aromatic ring compounds including stereoisomerism and optical isomerism. The module introduces knowledge of organic functions that were not covered by the Organic Chemistry module taught during the first year. The module also includes non-aromatic organic compounds and single- or multiple-function aromatic compounds.
Assessment Methods
- Theoretical and practical tests with assessment of activity in the classroom and homework. These constitute 40% of total mark of the
- A final exam constituting 60% of total
Module Syllabus
This module provides basic knowledge in organic chemistry and includes the study of non-aromatic ring organic compounds. It provides information about stereochemistry of non-aromatic ring compounds, including stereoisomerism and optical isomerism, and provides sufficient information on aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds containing single or multiple functions such as aryl halides, phenols, amines, diazonium salts and multi-functional amines. In addition, the module provides the study of some organic reaction mechanisms and heterogeneous ring compounds. Medical usage for some compounds mentioned in the module, the possibility of determining their acidic and alkaline characteristics and the stability of medicines are also presented.
